Sample Dialogue
Coach: (multiple opinions without a clear direction to the conversation)
Just so I’m sure I’m following this, let me summarize what I’ve heard so far. You can correct me if I’m off track. You started this topic when team decision making came up in the conversation. Based on what happened with two vendors, it seems that the selection process and plan were not clear. There was an observation about how decisions are made on teams, a question about individual roles in making decisions, a couple of people who basically think this is normal, why get in a twist, and at least one on the team who thinks this is a crucial “weakness” and needs to be fixed. My air traffic control screen is starting to get overwhelmed. Maybe I’m the only one, but from the looks on your faces I’d say others are a little lost in the subject too. Does that sound about right?
Team Member 1: Ultimately, it’s Paul’s call.
Team Member 2: But I don’t think we’re at “ultimately” yet. I think I have something to contribute, but I’m not sure what’s expected of me. I think the coach is right about the confusion.
Team Member 3: We don’t have a standard process.
Team Leader: It’s not always confusing. Sometimes it’s clear. Smooth sailing, and sometimes, yeah, I get the feeling it’s disjointed, and in the rush to get things done maybe we’re not clear about our roles in the decision on the table.
Team Member 2: Right. Am I being asked for an opinion? Or do I have a vote?
Coach: (to the team) So, let’s use this vendor-selection process as an example. What is the current process, and what’s working about it? We’ll also look at what’s not working.
